They are very simple by nature and in most cases all you need is a really strong back to make sure that the air conditioner can be lifted without hurting yourself. So that is the basis, but there are a few other things that need to be looked at and you should take the time to make sure that you have all the proper tools and supplies.

First and foremost you must ensure that you have the right size of air conditioner for the window that you are planning on putting it in. Make sure you measure several times or you will end up having to make several changes in the plans or moving the air conditioner to another window. Next you need to make sure that you have the proper power outlet nearby. The cords on the window air conditioners are not always very long and the outlet should be below the window or very close. Do not use an extension cord that requires an adaptor as this will cause a fire hazard. Lastly you need to make sure that you have the proper unit to ground support for the back of the air conditioner. The largest part of the unit will be sticking out of the window and it will need some support. Large landscaping timbers work well for this part of the job. There are some companies that make brackets for these units that can be used to support the air conditioner, but you will need to make sure that they are strong enough to hold the weight.
