Cover all the windows in the home with shrink plastic or ensure that the weather seals are working properly. Then you should close off areas where the cooling is not needed. For instance, the attic, where you simply store boxes and items is not a place where the cool air needs to reach. Keep the door closed and sealed so the air conditioner does not try to cool that area.
