Excess humidity in a home can cause a lot of problems that most will never think about.
There is so much more to the problem of high humidity in a home than being uncomfortable but sadly that is the number one thing that most people think about. Humidity cannot be resolved by using the air conditioning either, this is a common myth. Sure the use of the air conditioning unit will make the home feel more comfortable from a heat stand point, but it will actually add more humidity to the air and cause more problems. The trick is to lower the humidity in the home before you start using the air conditioner that way the entire process does not get out of control and start causing a bunch more problems. To do this you will need to take some simple steps to ensure that you are actually removing the humidity from the home and not just masking it by way of lowering the temperature. Humidity becomes dangerous to the structure of the home when the temperature is lowered and this will cause undue stress on the wood and plaster work that is in the home.
To ensure that you are removing the humidity you should start with a machine that is called a dehumidifier. This machine will appear like a small cabinet or table so that it will blend in with the surrounding furniture. It uses a process that will effectively remove the humidity in the home and make the area much more comfortable. Most will make this akin to a large dryer. As the machine pulls in the air it dries it out by removing the moisture from the air. As you are well aware, humidity is the measure of the moisture content in the air that is around us. Once the moisture has been removed the machine will then vent the air back out. It will continue to do this as long as it is allowed to cycle. You should run this machine at least twenty-four hours before the air conditioning system is started. This will make sure that you have brought the amount of moisture in the air down to a reasonable level and increased the comfort of the entire home.
Further, you should seal up all the points in the home where humidity could be allowed to come in. This is the points in the home where there are drafts that need to be fixed. In most cases you will find these around doors and windows and possibly at the bottom of walls where the floor meets. To take care of the problem with windows you can simply purchase the shrinking plastic to cover them with. This is the most common practice and will bring much relief. For the doors it is necessary to purchase some weather stripping. This is fairly inexpensive and will actually save you a lot of money in the long run.
